Aged 12, Amy Mullen had a little diary exploding with angst-filled poems and a desk spilling over with short stories about life and love. Writing was a teenage escape but not something Amy ever considered as a career.
After finishing school Amy did the right thing, securing a solid education in the form of an Associate Degree in Music and Video Business in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Business Degree in computers.
The best things to come out of those college years were a chance meeting with her musician husband, Spam, and a feisty, Wiggles-loving little daughter named Rayna. Amy threw herself headlong into the joys and frustrations of parenting and it wasn’t until 2004 when a new friend asked her – “so what do you do?” that Amy realized there was room in her life again for more than motherhood.
By now she was now living in New York, the arts capital of America, and Amy took a tentative step towards a new career, applying for a position as an online writer. She submitted her first article and waited in a cold sweat for a response. The piece was immediately accepted, along with an editor’s note asking for more.
Since then, Amy has written literally hundreds of articles for online publications around the world, including travel guides, business articles, expert interviews, keyword rich articles, and showbiz reviews. She works as a financial columnist and has been one of Associated Content’s prolific writers, scoring up to 80 thousand hits per article.
She finds the feedback from her work heartwarming and a little overwhelming. “One woman thanked me for something I wrote about anxiety and said it helped her so much that she printed it out so she could read it whenever she needed to see it,” explains Amy. “Mostly, people say it feels like a friend is talking to them, rather than just some stranger.”
When not hovering over a keyboard, Amy unwinds by taking road trips with friends, and by always keeping a camera handy. Photography is her second passion, though Amy is very clear about the one thing she hopes to achieve in her next life: SLEEP.
